5 Books Worth Your Reading Time in 2020

I wanted to start by saying that I’m not a big fan of reading books, and that is only because I’m a really practical person, I learned Marketing by doing it (built websites, promoted, optimized them until I became proficient). I usually read blogs, I found them more focused to a specific point and I found that enough most of the time.

This year we all know that COVID-19 kept us in houses and I had to find a activity to keep me busy in my spare time away from the computer. I picked up my Kindle and started browsing for some books. I love Seth Godin always did, however I never got to read all his books, and this brings us to the first book on the list that I got to read this year.

1. Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? How to drive your career and create a remarkable future

Why are some people easily outsourced, downsized, or freelanced into obscurity, while others have all the opportunities? I got captivated by this book, Seth Godin argues that it’s more essential than ever to become indispensable – to become a linchpin. Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations: they invent, lead (regardless of title), connect others, make things happen, and create order out of chaos.

This book highlights who companies really need and how you can become indispensable. In addition to keeping your job, you’ll find your work more challenging and enjoyable.

2. Growth Hacker Marketing: A Primer on the Future of PR, Marketing and Advertising

“Growth hackers thrive on doing what traditional businessmen would consider impossible: creating something from nothing. They ‘hack’ their company’s growth to create a narrative of sensational success, turning excited media, users and social media into a viral marketing force that will help their business grow exponentially.”

Although it was written in 2014, I think this is a book that everybody should go through. It’s an essential read for any marketer or anyone in business actually.

“Figure out what your most important metric for growth is and focus on that. Don’t listen to or judge yourself on other people.”

3. Platform: How to Fast-Track Your Personal Platform

Platform is the how-to handbook by top expert Cynthia Johnson for everyone who wants to develop and manage a personal brand.

Johnson explains the process of going from unknown to influencer by achieving personal proof, social proof, recognition, and association.

Whether you are just starting your career or are established, PLATFORM is the book for you. Cynthia Johnson’s explanations are clear and concise with numerous Social Media examples.

4. Marketing Operations: Make the Transformation (2nd Edition)

Marketing Operations: Make the Transformation covers how to leverage the behavior data provided by the rise of technology and eCommerce.

You will learn how the buying behavior of consumers can be captured and measured to strengthen marketing campaigns and infuse operational processes into their traditional workflows.

5. Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended

Rooted in the real-life experiences of an intelligence professional at the top of his game, Never Split the Difference will give you the competitive edge in any discussion.

I feel like the book aims to address sales people however the teachings of this can be applied anywhere in any department not only sales. Ideal read for someone involved in day to day negotiation or more in depth discussions

So we got to the end of my list, let me know what you think and if you have any recommendations let me know, I still have some time to kill in this period.
